Government Lacks Concern for Environment
PRESS RELEASE 3rd January 2000

The lack of a response to a fish kill today is a reflection of the government’s lack of commitment to protect our coastal environment.

The fish kill was reported to SUNFISH NQ by a recreational fisher at approximately 9AM and attempts were made immediately to pass on the information to the EPA. The local “After Hours” number listed in the telephone directory rang out.

The fish kill reported to SUNFISH NQ was in the upper tidal reaches of The Barrattas Creek and involved 40 to 50 large fish. The number of smaller fish was not reported but was, most probably, significant. This is the 6th fish kill that we are aware of so far this wet season.

The lack of a response by the EPA is further evidence of the lack of commitment and lack of funding provided by The Queensland Government that effectively prevents the EPA from doing it’s job. The Queensland Government’s environmental record is showing a significant LACK of commitment.

The cause of this fish kill is unknown although it can probably be put under the heading of “Low Oxygen or poor water quality”. This excuse is wearing a bit thin with recreational fishers. We want to know some answers.

The Queensland Government has recently asked for a greater role in the management of the Great Barrier Reef. From the response that we have seen to the fish kill problem it would appear that they are unable to cope with their present level of responsibility.
